Hello World !!

Postby LOADSAMUSIC » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:08 am

Just like to introduce myself as I registered today.. [may be yesterday now 'cos it's 3.35am !!]
Been a music fan since the 50s.. Mother sang no matter what she was doing !!!
Based in London near Tower Bridge and the Old Kent Road now !!!
Schooling, many moons ago was in Broadstairs, Kent.

Qualify as a ''silver surfer'' thus my knowledge of using/working spreadsheets etc
is ''extremely limited'' to say the least, trial and error,
without really knowing what I'm doing.

I just hope that I don't ask to many stupid questions,
but at the moment I have not got a clue how to go about using the info to it's full advantage.

Is there a ''step by step'' guide to setting things up??
I haven't come across one yet.

I found THE WORDS ''user configurations'' In a spreadsheet..
but when I CLICK..NOTHING HAPPENS.What am I doing wrong.
To play the songs ... do I have to have them on my computer first or are they on a
''cloud?'' somewhere..??

I have all the UK chart songs from 1952 to 1991 .. so would I have to rename each one to
ie... u52_001 - Al Martino - Here In My Heart etc ?

Just read this back !!
Think I'd better stop there !!!
You must be getting bored..
I'll ofcourse help in my limited capacity, so maybe I can search for lyrics..
Can't do much damage there [surely??]
 Thanks all in anticipation of your help..!!

Hi LOADSAMUSIC

And welcome to the world of Britburn.

I'll alert Kirk to your presence and no doubt he'll give you more information and help. Especially with regard to the Spreadsheet.

We are always on the lookout for help be it a track (or several), a label scan, Lyrics or even an elusive composer. We are trying to be as true to the original release as possible - and sometimes this can cause a lot of research. For instance the numerous versions of the Free song All Right Now that are out there.

Anyway - I am UK Based and glad I'm not the only person who spends unearthly hours at the computer.

Enjoy your time here and once again welcome.

Don't worry it's not that hard - and we've all been there.

Is there a ''step by step'' guide to setting things up??
I haven't come across one yet.

Apart from various bits and pieces in the 'Info' sheet there's no real setup guide. The (macro) spreadsheet is a kind of interface between the data and the user. The only real setup stage is to enable macros in Excel. Once done, you can create the folder heirachy (the spreadsheet will
do this automatically) and copy over your mp3's, labels and lyrics. Then have a play with the various click events. The most basic one is a double-click on a title - and the track will play, along with the label and lyrics showing - if you have them, of course.

I found THE WORDS ''user configurations'' In a spreadsheet..
but when I CLICK..NOTHING HAPPENS.What am I doing wrong.

You must enable macros first - or nothing happens. If you don't know how, reply with your
version of Excel and I'll give you step by step instructions.

To play the songs ... do I have to have them on my computer first or are they on a
''cloud?'' somewhere..??

Yes, you need the files - in the approriate Britburn folder - and -

I have all the UK chart songs from 1952 to 1991 .. so would I have to rename each one to
ie... u52_001 - Al Martino - Here In My Heart etc ?

Absolutely. It's the serial number that tells Excel what song it is, and what other files to match with it. Only the serial number 'uYY_XXXXz - ' is used - the rest of the filename can be anything. If you have lots of files already, but without numbers, applying them all manually will be too much, you'll need some sort of automation. I'm sure we can figure something out if you tell us how the files are currently named and stored. But if you want to test some the Prefix format is:

"u"
YY = 2 digit year until 1990. Then 4 digit year
"_"
XXXX 3 digit serial until 1990. Then 4 digit
z = "a" or "b" for Side, or "a-??" individual album tracks. Sometimes "b1", b2" etc where more than one B-Side exists
" - " End of Prefix flag. The rest is optional (not used by the macros) and usually 'Artist - Title'.
File extension is '.mp3', 'jpg', or '.txt'

Once you have macro's working and the files numbered, copy them into the project Import folder.
Then click 'Import' on the User Configuration Form and they will all be moved to their destination folders.

I'll ofcourse help in my limited capacity, so maybe I can search for lyrics..
Can't do much damage there [surely??]

Lyrics are our 'weak link' there's so much else to do they often get neglected. Any/all contributions are most welcome. :D

Any more questions, sing out. We'll definitely get things working for you !

Cheers - Kirk

Hello, Loadsamusic, and welcome!

Worst case scenario, I work around London Bridge, so I'm sure we can work something out :)

Well, thanks all for the welcome.
Am laid up in bed with a bed back but decided to have a look at the spreadsheet more closely.

To my amazement I've managed to work out a lot of it !!!!

I've got macros enabled, with user configurations I've set up A and B side, Image, Lyrics folders etc and have downloaded a couple of label scans and got them to the correct folders using the Import Folder..!!!

Quite proud of myself !!!

What do you suggest is the best media player to use??
Do some work better than others??

My main problem now is to get the mp3s correctly named with an
automated method that you suggest.
Not got a clue about that though, at present.

If you suggest a pre-defined format for the mp3s that works already then I
can rename files to fit that. Whatever you feel is easiest.

I sent a couple of tracks you were looking for in an email.
I have a couple more available but just wanted to check first that I
had sent them to the correct email address and that they had been recieved.

Painkillers and an attempt at sleep now..!!
Thanks for the help.
Regards to all.
Les

Hi Les,

What name format are your mp3 files currently? I'm sure we can find some way of automating the renaming process between us.

The simplest format is uYY_xxxxz

u denotes Britburn (rather than the US versions, known as Whitburn)
YY is the year (two digits until 1999, four thereafter)
xxxx is the 3 or 4 figure Britburn ranking number
z is the a or b side

For example;
u52_001a - Al Martino - Here In My Heart.mp3
u52_001b - Al Matino - I Cried Myself To Sleep.mp3
