Bert

Before I start checking against my library, what lee way do you give in terms of time? Just thinking I tend to delete the lead in and out on a vinyl rip (something I started doing ages ago when disk space was at more of a premium) which could mean an 8 or 9 second difference in the overall times.

Hi Bert

Just uploaded the four missing tracks

Mike Berry - Memories
Barron Knights - Blackboard Jumble
Tweets - Let's All Sing Like The Birdies Sing
Video Symphonic - The Flame Trees Of Thika

to the server.

They're zipped into the file Missing81.zip.

Any problems let me know.

Personally I rip 2 seconds lead in and the same out, and anything over 10 seconds difference is considered suspect until proven otherwise.

It's worth testing your turntable for timing against a known track (i.e. comparing a vinyl rip against a cd rip, comparing the two waveforms to enure the versions are the same) - it's possible the turntable might be out by a couple of percent if the belt is worn or the mechanism is tight.

Of course, our existing research may always be incorrect too, so >10 seconds could simply mean the database is incorrect.

Even taking all that into account, I've come across several instances where the album and single times are pretty close, certainly within the 10 second arbitrary marker, yet still been completely different versions (or even very similar, but slightly different). I believe one of the Dead Kennedy's singles was 2 seconds longer than the album version, with only a small variation between the two.

My perfect collection would be a vinyl rip of every track, even a poor quality one if only for comparison purposes, and a nice flac rip of the same version direct from CD. There are certainly a few tracks in the online collection that are early fades of longer CD album tracks, perfect copies of the single in every way thanks to a crackly vinyl rip to confirm it...

Cheers also for the missing tracks, we have at least one version of every track now. Hopefully I can finish the version weeding over the weekend. At that point I'll happily make available what I've got, but before posting to the newsgroup the final stage will be to listen to every track to ensure the quality is reasonable!

All the best,

B

Thanks for the info. The whole version control thing is a nightmare as you get further into the 1980's, for instance the 1983 12" of Blue Monday by New Order is 7'29", however the 1988 reissue is actually 7'10" (data from New Order on line).

I always go with you guys so when tracks become available I replace my existing copy - normally because the quality is so much better.

Okay - I'll have a look a your timings and see whether any I already have are nearer the actual timing. If they are I'll let you know. I did an initial trawl and don't think there's that many over the 10 second limit).

Unfortunately I have nothing to compare against apart from the timings so it could be the version I have is a later re-release. Lets see what I get! (once I manage to persuade Excel to deal with negative time values!!) and then perhaps you can let me know if you would like any of them.

If you need any excel help feel free to shout - there's several of us quite proficient at various aspects in here!!

Cheer but I'm almost there!

I got distracted as I had to rebuild my Music Library (I use Helium Music Manager to manage all my MP3's). I wanted to bring my folder structure in line with the Britburn standard to make lookups easier (save lots of substituting and concatenating!!).

Hopefully I'll have it completed tomorrow and I'll post it here.

Bert

Just had a look and I was a lot nearer than I thought.

I've got 70 on the list with varying time differences - hopefully the S/Sheet is fairly self explanatory.

The second worksheet is just a list of those with a time difference of over a minute. I've mailed this around a few people I know to see if I can get copies that are nearer the times. However 1 reply I had (from a fairly good source - supplied the missing 1981 tracks) says the Patrice Rushton 7" 45 (highlighted on S/S) is over 6 minutes as he ripped it a few weeks ago and was quite surprised - are we looking for a Radio Edit perhaps?

He's a bit busy this week but has promised to check his copies and let me have anything that is nearer to the actual time.

Okay as I can't find the attach file option, Ive PM'd it to you.

I've managed to search through about 50% of my vinyl today. It really does need sorting out. And more space! However, I found another 13 to knock off the wanted list, I'll wade through some more tomorrow evening, then it'll be Sunday before I get back to them. Here's the latest "differences to check" list. The first time is that in the spreadsheet, the second is the physical file. Any confirmation that one or the other time is correct would be helpful, if you have the vinyl keep it to one side in case it's required during the next stage.

It's quite possible that the spreadsheet data is incorrect. It's been sourced from hundreds of places, and without the physical vinyl it's often a "best guess". If the vinyl is 6:47 then the track we have is correct and the spreadsheet will be updated accordingly.

The upload attachment option is on a tab next to options underneath the message when you preview or submit.
