Dave

Hi Dave,

Your welcome, some news servers can be a bit slow in showing all posts, even if they are uploaded at the same time they can sometimes show up hours later.
The comments Bert made about turning on partial downloads refers to the fact that a single track consist of a number of parts, say 20, and only 19 of them are on the server so the file is incomplete. The program that you use to download the tracks can be set to show complete files only or both complete and incomplete files. You need to check that yours is set to show both, the incomplete ones show up in a different colour text to the complete ones. Any incomplete files can be repaired using the Par files and a program called QuickPar.

Cheers
Glinty

Hi Guys

Great post

001 - 300 came through okay on Giganews with a small amount of help from the PAR files

301 - 601 not quite enough (1 block still required), below are the affected files:
312a (2 blocks missing), 321a (3 blocks missing), 327a (Missing - strange behaviour on this, no parts made it through - guessing it is 7 blocks), 332a (1 block missing), 361a (1 block missing), 392a (1 block missing), 393a (2 blocks missing), 475a (1 block missing), 505a (3 blocks missing), 533a (2 blocks missing), 534a (2 blocks missing), 537a (2 blocks missing).

A repost on a few of these would be appreciated to enable the PAR's to work, many thanks in advance. :D

Strange indeed, it's complete on my giganews ...
I'll throw up a couple more pars for each block as well (I have 300mb worth for each 300).

Just uploaded correction for "u80_281a - XTC - Towers Of London". Orginal post was "XTC - Generals And Majors".

That's shocking. iTunes (spit) tells me I've listened to that 43 times in the last year and I didn't spot that. I hang my head in shame.

Where to next?

Looking back, it's taken me over a year to sort out 1980, and there are still plenty that need upgrading. I've probably also got the best part of 1,000 45s sitting here that I've given no more than a cursory glance to.

At the same time I've added a decades worth of (95%?) complete data to the spreadsheet and set up the basic data set for 1990 to 2004 (and onwards).

Bar one or two tweaks I've pretty much neglected the website side of the project, which is still only up to 1979. To say this is all time consuming is rather an under-exaggeration!

Anyway, now I've garnered your sympathy (except Kirk, who needs even more than me!), onto the point - I'd like to concentrate on bringing the spreadsheet up to date and getting the data on the website. So, if anyone has any thoughts on how we can co-ordinate our efforts for the binary side of things, I'm listening ...

u80_380a - Ruts - West One (Shine On Me).mp3 is the album version. I've just got hold of the 7" version at 256 but I also have the original 7". Would people prefer a CD rip @ 256 or vinyl rip @ 320?

Can someone please remind me of the tag that goes in the copyright field for upgrades as I can't find it on the forum.

If the CD is the same as the vinyl, I'd prefer the CD.

Ummm - tricky

I would prefer the charting version which I suspect in 1989 was the 7" vinyl - could Kirk or Bert confirm which?. However if the majority go with the CD I'll stick with that.

For the sake of simplicity we've so far used the basic premise that pre-1960 we look for the 78rpm version (failing that the 7"), 1960-1989 the 7" single version is preferred (if released - several were only available in 12" or even cassette single format), thereafter we'll be looking as CD Single versions (more on that as we get nearer to finishing the 80s off).

A 256k CD rip is often likely to be better quality, imo, than a 320k vinyl rip, so if they're the same track then I'd probably prefer the CD rip, but that's personal choice. Some people like the occasional snap, crackle and pop (and it certainly doesn't bother me as much as some). No reason why you can't post both an let people take their pick. But if it's 7" vinyl or CD Album and the versions are different then 7" vinyl every time, please.

The copyright id3 tag version number is simply the next "version" number, so if one is already uploaded and you post two more, they new ones will be 2 and 3. Unless there's some discussion otherwise I'll pick one as the "official" Britburn entry and that will remain in the database unless or until a superior version is found. The idea behind this is that we'll be able to have a set of par files, or even an sfv file, so people can easily check they have the correct versions.

Cheers,

B

A few upgrades posted to Usenet with 15% pars, especially for those of you who are into punk, new wave and mod. I thought I'd stated that the Ruts CD rip was the same version as the 7", a bonus track on the 2005 reissue of the "Grin And Bear It" album, and this is the rip I have posted. As Bert pointed out, the Police track was 160k/s mono and so is equivalent to 320k/s stereo (which is redundant bitrate anyway) so I didn't post that.

Thanks to everyone for all their efforts getting this collection togther. I've been listening through the tracks and have discovered a couple of incorrect songs.

When you play both versions of "u80_483a - Keith Michell, Captain Beaky & His Band - The Trial Of Hissing Sid" you get "u80_073a - Keith Michell, Captain Beaky & His Band - Captain Beaky". I do have a copy of "hissing sid" which I can post if required. Unfortunately it's only 128 bit rate and the timing (3.21) doesn't match the speadsheet.

Also "u80_277a - New Musik - This World Of Water" is not the correct song. I have a copy of the CD from which the track came, and I can post it if required. The timing for the song (3.39) doesn't match the spreadsheet.
