The Lurkers - Out In The Dark EP

Postby rejects » Thu Nov 18, 2010 6:30 pm

I've just ripped this one from "The Punk Singles Collection" CD for my 70s upgrade but I'm confused by the entries in the spreadsheet. I also have the original 7", there are two tracks on the A-side, Out In The Dark and Cyanide, and two on the B-side, Suzie Is A Floozie and Cyanide (Pub version).

The spreadsheet has 2 entries for a 2-track single u79_546 has Cyanide on the A-side and Out In The Dark on the B-side, while u79_549 has the 2 tracks reversed. This never existed as a two-track single, not at least a stock copy.

Hi Rejects,

It isn't classed as a 2 track single, the spreadsheet shows it format as 7" 45x4. Why it appears twice is because both 'Cyanide' and 'Out In The Dark' charted for one week on the 9 Jun 1979. This gives each a serial number, 79_546 and 79_549. The other 3 tracks in each case are considered the B-Sides.

The numbers are not consecutive because 4 tracks tied with 1 week at position 72 and therefore are ranked alphabetically by title.

Cheers - Kirk

On a point of order, didn't we agree that all track charting in this fashion would be grouped together?

Hiya Bert,

Quite likely we did - but as this came from you it had to be right

Renumber ?? I'm also slightly worried it might be an EP. If it is I guess it''ll need the EP treatment ???

Unfortunately I only have the Record Mirror chart for that week, which was a top 50 and without release details. Apparently some of the record companies were a bit reluctant to make those public.(!).

GBHS is quite clear, Out In The Dark / Cyanide. And discogs has the track listing; http://www.discogs.com/Lurkers-Out-In-T ... se/1964292 ... which can be confirmed by a dozen or so on sale at any time on ebay.

So we have four tracks, two of which (the A sides) charted. Not that unusual for the era.

Sorry, yes, a small renumbering required.

Thanks for clearing that up, I should have checked GBHS myself, it is indeed listed as Out In The Dark/Cyanide. I should have scrolled the screen to see the other tracks, I just saw part of the first track in the B-side column.

I tend to think of this as an EP because it has 4 tracks, but it doesn't have a title or anything else to call it an EP on either the labels or sleeve.

Could you let me know the titles for this one please? For now I'm going with the following:

u79_546a1 - The Lurkers - Out In The Dark.mp3
u79_546a2 - The Lurkers - Cyanide.mp3
u79_546b1 - The Lurkers - Cyanide (Pub Version).mp3
u79_546b1 - The Lurkers - Suzie is a floozie.mp3

I'll leave the placeholders up to you.

You're not wrong, it is an EP, it just didn't chart as such, which is what we're primarily interested in for the purpose of the project listings. This way you can re-create the correct chart by reverse engineering the data, that's the reasoning behind our method.

I think with the renumbering it will end up with the two entries thus;

u79_546a1 - The Lurkers - Cyanide.mp3
u79_546b1 - Placeholder - The Lurkers - Out In The Dark
u79_546b2 - The Lurkers - Cyanide (Pub Version).mp3
u79_546b3 - The Lurkers - Suzie Is A Floozie.mp3

u79_547a1 - The Lurkers - Out In The Dark.mp3
u79_547b1 - Placeholder - The Lurkers - Cyanide
u79_547b2 - Placeholder - The Lurkers - Cyanide (Pub Version)
u79_547b3 - Placeholder - The Lurkers - Suzie Is A Floozie

I'm sure Kirk will confirm!

100% Bert, leaving the four affected A-Sides -

u79_546 - Lurkers - Cyanide.mp3
u79_547 - Lurkers - Out In The Dark.mp3
u79_548 - Light Of The World - Midnight Groovin'.mp3
u79_549 - Lurkers - New Guitar In Town.mp3
u79_550 - Den Hegarty - Voodoo Voodoo [3.40 version].mp3

and no labels to renumber. The 'a' subletter is optional for mp3's. But I have added it to every year where there's been a B-Side post.
Cheers - Kirk
