1954 Hits

Postby Theo » Tue Nov 23, 2010 12:18 am

I have most of this year, but...

22 Jan 1954 The Obernkirchen Children's Choir The Happy Wanderer (Der frohliche Wanderer)
The only version I have is quite a crackly 78rpm rip. Is there a cleaner one?

05 Mar 1954 Duke Ellington Skin Deep
I have "Part 1" from your Britburn collection, Kirk. But do you have Part 2? Preferably, I think both parts should be one track. (So 6:54 approx.)

09 Apr 1954 Jackie Brown & His Orchestra Theme From 'The Glenn Miller Story'
Don't have this at all. I believe it's on
FROM STAGE AND SCREEN - The Golden Age of Light Music Vol. 52 -Guild Light Music mono GLCD5152

09 Apr 1954 Max Bygraves The Jones Boy
09 Apr 1954 Max Miller Mary From The Dairy
Missing both these.

16 Apr 1954 Ruby Wright Bimbo
Echo was added for the UK 45/78rpm release, making it sound markedly different to the US version which was on the Ruby Wright CD collection. I have a very good 78rpm disc dub, although it's not 'perfect'.

19 Apr 1954 Ted Heath & His Music Lush Slide
Missing this.

30 Apr 1954 Eve Boswell Don't Ever Leave Me
The best I have is a very good 78rpm dub, but again, not perfect.

30 Apr 1954 The Squadronaires Wolf On The Prowl
Missing.

21 May 1954 Tony Brent & Billie Anthony Cross Over The Bridge
All I have is a rather crackly 78rpm rip.

21 May 1954 Winifred Atwell The Charleston
A very good, but not perfect, 78rpm dub.

04 Jun 1954 The Beverley Sisters Cross Over The Bridge
A noise 78rpm rip. It once appeared on an LP...

18 Jun 1954 Jimmy Young Little Things Mean A Lot
This is a rather ropey 78rpm dub, actually issued by the copyright holders, Universal!

16 Jul 1954 Cyril Stapleton & His Orchestra Lester Leaps In
Missing.

Can you improve on my 'inferior' copies, and/or provide the missing tracks?

Hi Theo,

Can do...

Side I is 3:05, Side 2 3:37 ripped from the Australian Philips 78 and Cedared.

Our source unknown. Good rip - 3:00
09 Apr 1954 Max Bygraves The Jones Boy
09 Apr 1954 Max Miller Mary From The Dairy
Missing both these.

'Mary' is a good CD rip but sadly Max needs improving. One from Ossies cassette.
16 Apr 1954 Ruby Wright Bimbo
Echo was added for the UK 45/78rpm release, making it sound markedly different to the US version which was on the Ruby Wright CD collection.

Ok for that one too. I found a dry version with a count down on it (American accent!)
19 Apr 1954 Ted Heath & His Music Lush Slide

Can do.. decent rip
30 Apr 1954 Eve Boswell Don't Ever Leave Me

Ditto...
30 Apr 1954 The Squadronaires Wolf On The Prowl

Yes, good CD rip
21 May 1954 Tony Brent & Billie Anthony Cross Over The Bridge
All I have is a rather crackly 78rpm rip.
21 May 1954 Winifred Atwell The Charleston
A very good, but not perfect, 78rpm dub.

Both of ours are fine.
04 Jun 1954 The Beverley Sisters Cross Over The Bridge
A noise 78rpm rip. It once appeared on an LP...

Sounds like our is ex CD.
18 Jun 1954 Jimmy Young Little Things Mean A Lot

Yes the Spectrum CD! So is our's but have just slightly enhanced it, check and compare ??
16 Jul 1954 Cyril Stapleton & His Orchestra Lester Leaps In

Good vinyl rip.

So apart from 'Jones Boy' we can probably improve things a bit :D

Copies of all those would be great if possible, thanks!

Does that mean you have a digital transfer of the 'echoed' Bimbo?

The Max track was issued on 45rpm, though perhaps difficult to find. I wonder if it was ever on an LP?

I've get a batch email process underway :D

Don't know for sure if Bimbo is ex CD but it's certainly CD-quality! Will you let me know it is the right one? Compared to the 'dry' version it has added echo but maybe there was a third? Always a bit of a guestimate when there's no vinyl to compare with...

Will ask theDoctor (GB) if he has 'Jones Boy'. We need a better copy, too.

Thanks for the contact for sleeves, and I'll ask Brian about the Muriel Smith track.

Cheers - Kirk

The Max Miller track is his 1938 recording...

Brian is a fan of MM, so he's sure to have the Philips version.
